  • Antiepileptic Drugs and Suicidality

    FDA is warning healthcare professionals that is the label for antiepileptic drugs now warn that the patients have taken these drugs at increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. The warnings are on the FDA's analysis of placebo-controlled clinical studies of eleven drugs used to treat epilepsy, psychiatric disorders and other conditions. In this analysis, the risk for some patients, the AEDs with those receiving placebo: 0.43% vs. doubled0.22%. The following drugs were included in the analysis: carbamazepine (Carbatrol, such as, Equetro, Tegretol, Tegretol XR) markets felbamate (marketed as Felbatol) Gabapentin (marketed as Neurontin marketed), lamotrigine (Lamictal), Levetiracetam (marketed Keppra), Oxcarbazepine (marketed as Trileptal) Pregabalin (Lyrica marketed) Tiagabine (marketed as Gabitril), topiramate (Topamax marketed) Valproate (marketed as Depakote, Depakote ER, Depakene, Depacon) Zonisamide (marketed asZonegran) The increased risk was already one week after initiation of therapy seen and continue for 24 weeks. And it was generally consistent for all eleven drugs in the analysis and a number of indications. This suggests that this risk to all antiepileptic drugs, if they are used for every indication – including those that shall not part of the analysis.
